Origins: Statement of Faith

We believe:

1. The Bible to be the inspired, infallible, divinely preserved Word of God, the supreme and final authority for all faith and life.

2. That there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3. In the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood on the cross, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, and His imminent return in power and glory.

4. That man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin and is therefore lost, and only those who put their faith in Jesus Christ alone, not trusting in any personal works whatsoever, can be saved.

5. That salvation is the free gift of God brought to the sinner by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Whose substitutionary death on the cross paid the penalty for man’s sin.

6. That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict mankind; indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for godly living and service.

7. In the spiritual unity of believers through our common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that individual doctrinal differences which may exist, outside of the aforementioned (1-6), should not hinder the unity of Origins simple church network

Bring on a New Year and a New Decade!

Happy New Year!!
Do you remember where you were at the beginning of the decade we just left behind? Some of us may have been gripped by fear at the thought of Y2K, and some of us were so young we had no idea what it all meant we were just up for the adventure. As I look back over the last decade of my life I am simply amazed at what God has done. He called me to ministry, moved to me New Orleans to attend seminary, I lost a parent, experienced a devastating Hurricane and the exile from the city that I love, was called to church staff positions that were all in God’s timing the going and then the leaving, experienced the deepest of emotional hurts and in the last year of the decade have finally understood what it means to begin the healing process. WOW!! It was an amazing decade.
Jeremiah 29:11 simply states that God knows the plans He has for us, plans to prosper and not to harm, plan for our good not for evil. As I look back over the last decade at the joy, the pain, the emotional chaos. I would not trade it for anything in the world, because without it I would not have been able to walk the amazing roads on the this journey of life with the one who loves me in spite of myself and the one who knew me before I was knit together in my mother’s womb, Jehovah God himself.
I believe God has amazing things in store for each and everyone of us this brand new year and in this brand new decade. So bring it on 2010 we are ready and armed with the love, grace and mercy of Jesus that is renewed every single morning.

Happy New Year!!!
Carrie

The Jesse Tree

Sorry about the missing updates. We have started the Advent season and the worship time has been so family oriented. It is a truly different experience. Lots of busy people in Origins. I hope we can slow down and enjoy the celebration of God reaching into humanity in the flesh and changing the world forever. As we contemplated Jesus in our lives, changing us individually forever, each one of us added a leaf the the Jesse Tree that included our favorite “name” for Jesus.
Many of Jesus’ monikers are listed in the previous post. Many more are orchestrated through the Scriptures. Here are a few:

  •  Alpha and Omega (Rev. 1:8; 22:13)
  • Author of Life (Acts 3:15)
  • Bridegroom (Mt. 9:15)
  • Creator (John 1:3)
  • Gate (John 10:9)
  • Great High Priest (Heb. 4:14)
  • Hope of Glory (Col. 1:27)
  • I Am (John 8:58) also see previous post
  • Immanuel (Mt. 1:23)
  • King of kings (1 Tim 6:15; Rev. 19:16)
  • Lamb of God (John 1:29)
  • Living Stone (1 Pet. 2:4)
  • Lord of lords (Rev. 19:16)
  • Mediator of the New Covenant (Heb. 9:15)
  • Our Righteousness (1 Cor. 1:30)
  • Rock (1 Cor. 10:4)
  • Savior (Eph. 5:23; Titus 1:4; 3:6; 2 Pet. 2:20)
  • Wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:24)
  • Word (John 1:1)

Believe it, or not, there are many more. Post a comment with your favorite, or favorites with an explanation. Then come and share worship with us in the many ways that it manifested at Origins.

OK, We’re Out of the Boat! Now What? – the end

Welcome Hal and Brenda, and thanks for the great smoked chicken. We missed David, he was playing with a praise team in another ministry opportunity. What a deeply meaningful worship experience tonight. We took a night to worship solely in Scripture and prayer; specifically the heart of Jesus’ farewell discourse. United by the Holy Spirit we attempted to grasp the personal and cultural impact of Jesus saying “I am . . . “

  1. the Bread of life (John 6:35)
  2. the Light of the world (John 8:12)
  3. the Door of the sheep (John 10:7)
  4. the Good Shepherd (John 10:11)
  5. the Resurrection and the Life (11:25)
  6. the Way, the Truth, and the Life (14:6)
  7. the true Vine (15:1)

Jesus made it clear, in chapter 14, there are great expectations of you and I. Please pray about what Jesus wants to do through you

  • “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (14:1-7 ESV) This is the moment that the disciples must move from literal fellowship to spiritual faith. Do you accept the historical Jesus, or believe and love the Risen Christ?
  • Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. (14:8-14 ESV) Was Jesus preparing the disciples for the physical miracles they would perform, or the spiritual impact they would experience? What is the application for us?
Please share how God is leading you in your unique contribution to Origins. If you are a reader of the blog only, let us know how you pray for us here in New Orleans. Thanks!
